Dear Wareham Families,

“Minot Forest KKids” is an elementary school club that focuses on service learning that is student-led and student-driven. It is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Bourne and Wareham and the Office of Beyond School Time, and promotes student activism and advocacy. Under the direction of club advisor, Mr. Michael Houdlette, the Minot KKids recently began a project to raise awareness for the plight of animals who have suffered greatly, due to the tragic fires in Australia. As well, they are supporting local efforts by creating beautiful, heartfelt cards to send to the Hope Factory to distribute to hospitalized children in Massachusetts.

When Wareham students enter the middle school they are eligible to join the Builder’s Club, and students in grades eight through twelve may elect to join the Key Club, both of which are Kiwanis Club affiliates. Students in all three of these clubs engage in leadership skills by developing service projects that help both the local community, as well as the global community. Middle school Builder’s Club students partner with the CARE STAGE program to participate in the weekend backpack food initiative, providing nutritious meals and snacks for students in need each weekend. WHS Key Clubbers will spend their day off of school on Monday with club advisor, Col. Matthew Stanton, visiting the Hope Factory in Pocasset to help with their efforts to bring smiles to the faces of hospitalized youth. We are extremely proud of all of our WPS students who belong to each one of these organizations and commend them on the tremendous work they are doing to make a difference in our world.

As a reminder, there is no school for students today, Friday, January 17th due to in-service. On Monday, January 20th, all Wareham Public Schools will be closed in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. All schools will resume their regular schedules on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. Best wishes for a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood
