    Summer Brochure

    Letter to Parents

    July Calendar

    August Calendar

    Dear Parent/Guardian:

This letter is to inform you of Wareham’s 5th Quarter curriculum changes and grading policy. This

summer the 5th Quarter is completely online via the Edgenuity program. However, to aid students

with their work, licensed English, math, science, and history teachers will be in the library on their assigned

days to help students and provide modifications in assessment when they are warranted. These online

classes require students to take on more of a self-directed learning responsibility with the added advantage

of tutorial help once a week when their class meets in the library. Math and science classes will meet five

times this summer: Wednesday, July 11th; Monday, July 16th; Monday, July 23rd; Monday, July 30th; and

Wednesday, August 8th. English and history classes will meet five times as well, but on different days:

Thursday, July 12th; Tuesday, July 17th; Tuesday, July 24th; Tuesday, July 31st; and Thursday, August 9th.

(See enclosed calendar for more details.) Students that need to take electives can take them on either the

math and science day or the English and history day based upon availability. WHS students will be issued

chromebooks on their first day of summer school, and they should bring them with their headphones each

day their class meets. Because class only meets once a week students are expected to complete

coursework at home. As such, students are expected to work at home at least three days a week

for two hours a day for each class. That adds up to at least six hours per week and 30 hours total

for the five weeks of the course. Failure to complete coursework at home may result in a failure

    for that class.

The “Fifth Quarter” name reflects the fact that the Wareham School District views the summer

session as an extension of the school year rather than a replacement for it. As such, this online learning

environment is designed to supplement rather than supplant the year long curriculum. Each class will have

a final exam, and it will be administered on the final class date listed in the calendar. Students are expected

to have completed all coursework prior to the final exam. In addition, WHS students’ final grades will be

calculated by using a weighted average. The summer session will count as 60% of each student’s overall

grade while the remaining 40% will come from each student’s regular school year average. For example,

Student A may have earned 51% in Algebra 1 during the school year. In order for Student A to pass for the

year, he or she would have to earn at least a 75% during the summer session [.6(75) + .4(51) = .65 or 65%].

65% or a D average will remain the minimum standard to earn a passing grade after the calculation is made.

Students will be informed of the minimum grade they must achieve during the first week of summer school.

This standard will also be noted on all progress reports during the third and fourth weeks of the program.

Students who need Credit Retrieval due to excessive absences (NC’s) during the school year can

take a 5th Quarter class, or they may enroll in the free SAIL program. For more information on the SAIL

program contact Ms. Stephanie Santos at 508-291-3510 x214. She will also be available at registration.

Students who need to take summer school may also enroll in the 21st CCLC grant-funded SAIL program.

These dually enrolled students are eligible for a free 5th Quarter online summer school class in the third

session if their tuiton for first two summer school classes is paid in full. Only Wareham Public School

students enrolled in SAIL, or who are dually in enrolled in both the 5th Quarter and SAIL programs,

are eligible for bus transportation to and from WHS. Free lunch will be provided in the

cafeteria from 12:00-12:25 PM each school day. The registration dates for Wareham’s 5th Quarter

Summer Session are 7/2 and 7/9 from 8 AM - 12 PM at Wareham High School in Room 115.

For more information about the program or registration, please look at the enclosed brochure or call 508-

291-3510 ext. 212, or email me at: jflynn@wareham.k12.ma.us.

  • Incoming 8th Grade Orientation

Posted by Mrs. Freitas and Mr. Palladino on 2/1/2018 6:00:00 AM

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

While our staff and students were very excited and looking forward to demonstrating and sharing all the wonderful classes, clubs and activities your incoming 8th grader would experience next year as a WHS freshman, we deeply regret that we will not be able to hold this event due to lack of participation.
It is our hope that if we try to reschedule this same event later in the year, we can avoid scheduling conflicts and perhaps more parents and guardians will be able to attend.  Thank you so much for your interest!
