OBJECTIVES:

INTRODUCTION: 

The world is getting smaller every day.  At a local store, Americans can buy cheese from Switzerland, coffee from Colombia, sneakers from Indonesia, nuts from Ivory Coast, and Computer software from India. This is the way of Globalization.

Some say that Globalization is good while others claim that it is the root of all evil in the world.  The President of the United States promotes global free trade.  However, when heads of states gather to discuss free trade, protesters angrily gather outside of the meeting building; violence and destruction sometimes describe their protest. To understand the world today, one must grasp the complexity of Globalization.

TASK:  

Students will research globalization as nations trade with one another.  Note that Globalization is much larger than trade, but this will the first step of understanding this term. Identify the pros and cons of Globalization.  Provide an example highlighting the analysis.  Create a nation’s trading policy.  Choose a position dealing with Globalization. Opponents will show how globalization has damage or ruin the country; Supports will show how globalization helped the country.

PROCESS:

1. Read various articles about globalization and world trade.
a. Read the Current Articles about globalization.  Summarize one. (At Least One Paragraph)
b. Read the Presidential articles. Summarize one. (At Least One Paragraph)
c. Read the Key Terms section, create a definition and place the eight terms in your Laundry List section of your notebook.
2. After researching the complexities of Globalization, create a fictitious nation identifying the location and neighboring (real) nations and (real) potential trading partners.
3. Create a map that illustrates neighbors and trading partners. Provide arrows indicating trade routes and a key illustrating main trading products. (Homework Assignment)
4. Read the section called Research Tools.  Find articles supporting and rejecting Globalization.  Make two list labeled Pro and Con.  Place in your notebook for teacher inspection.
5. Determine your position concerning Globalization.  Are you in favor, do you reject, or are you somewhere in between.  Explain your position by describing your fictitious nations trading policies.  Explain reasons behind this trade policy.  
6. Use a newspaper article as a format.
7. Map Activity must display your fictitious nation's trading policy (For or Against)
