Introduction:
The planet Earth contains over 6 billion people. "The World population
will grow by 50 per cent, from 6.1 billion today to 9.3 billion,
by 2050. The 48 least-developed countries will nearly triple in size, from
658 million to 1.8 billion people, according to the United Nations
Population Division, which today released highlights of its forthcoming
publication, World Population Prospects: the 2000 Revision."
These projections will have serious effects on the environment, disease
control, food supply, and the other geographical based problems.
The disaster of the second world war forced the nations to come together
rather than compete to solve problems. On October 24,
1945, the United Nations was created to allow nations to work cooperatively.
Through this community of 159 member nations, the UN works for world peace,
security, and the betterment of humanity. Nations send representatives
to the UN headquarters located in New York City to discuss problems and
find solutions.
Task:
You are a member of the United Nations. The UN agency, that you are
in charge of, researches a region of the world. This agency deals with
environmental issues. You are to identify environmental problems of your
assigned region. Discuss the cost and/or benefits of globalization.
Finally, you need to present your solution in a profession manner to the
General Assembly. Representatives will discuss the presentation and
consider the solution. They will then vote to determine whether to
accept your proposal.
Process:
1. Read in your textbook pages 583 to 585. List the environmental challenges
that the world faces today. Define
globalization and identify its costs and its benefits.
2. You are assigned a region:
North America
Central America
South America
Western Europe
Eastern Europe
Northern Africa
Southern Africa
Middle East
South East Asia
East Asia
Pacific nations
3. You need to know the nations of your region. Look at a map
of your region. Create a detailed map with national borders
of your region. Prepare it for the UN
presentation. You can get a map from the web site (must be of the
region ONLY) or
scan your work. [This will be your first page
of your presentation]
4. You need to know the environment of your region area. Look
up a terrain map of your region. Create a detailed terrain
map illustrating the various biomes of the
region (desert, mountain range, jungles, etc.). You can get a map from
the web
site (must be of the region ONLY) or scan your work.
[This will be your second page of your presentation]
5. Research the region's environmental problem. The links below
connects you to sites that will assist you in your research.
Record the site that you use in your bibliography.
Identify the causes of the problem. Determine whether the world
community caused the problem (Cost of Globalization)
or is it a locally based. This should be no more than a page long
in outline formation. This is not an essay.
[This will be your third page of your presentation]
6. Create a solution. This solution does not comes from
your textbook or web site. Identify how the world community can
assist in the solution (Benefits of Globalization).
However, be careful. The world community can also do more
damage. Therefore, aviod various costs to
globalization by placing warnings in your solution. This should be
no more than a page long in outline formation. This
is not an essay. [This will be your fourth page of your presentation]
7. Place your work in four Power point pages to be in a profession fashion.
Make a copy of each page and place them in into
your portfolio. Place your Power point presentation
onto a disk and submit to the teacher. The best Power points
presentations will gain bonus points and be presented
to the class by the teacher. Click

Point.
8. Create a bibliography. Place in your portfolio. (What web sites
did you use?)
