Wareham Public Schools Internet Policy

The school committee has issued a policy for Internet use by students and staff. Read the policy to familiarize yourself with the purpose of the Internet in school and the standards of behavior that are required. The Internet Policy may be accessed on the Wareham Public Schools' Web Page.

Use of the Internet in the Wareham Public Schools is reserved for school related work. Infractions are brought to the attention of the administration.

Copyright and Plagiarism

You have often heard you teachers say to put your reports in your own words and not to copy another's work or ideas. This section of the site provides an explanation and some links for you to explore the topic. Remember, copyright infringement and plagiarism is theft!

Soon this part of the site will include examples of plagiarism and copyright infringement. You will also find a list of sites to help you avoid plagiarism and copyright infringement.

Information Literacy: Using the Library

Need some help using the online databases? Never been in the library? View pictures of the library or learn to use the online databases. Discover ways to do more effective searches on the WWW and how to evaluate the material on web sites.

Select a Search Engine

Select a search engine or directory to suit your needs. Learn the difference between a search engine and a directory. Do you know what the Invisible Web is? Go to the help sections of the search engine site to learn how to make efficient searches.

Online Databases

Our online databases provide access to a large variety of magazine and newspaper articles for all areas of the curriculum. Most are provided by our membership in SEMLS (Southeastern Massachusetts Library System) The WHS Library offers Twayne's Online Database a collection of literary criticism and Scribner's Writers which includes both biography and criticism in each article.

Students, faculty, and staff may use the databases while at school or at home. Check the Online Database section of the Library Site for details.

Evaluating a Web Site

Many people believe that all information on the Internet is reliable but that isn't true. Anyone can post information to the Internet so it is important that students learn to distinguish between the reliable and the unreliable. The evaluation sheet provided on the library home page is just one example of many that are available. If you wish to see other examples try Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators. She has some evaluation tools of her own posted, articles she has written on the subject, and other sites that explore the topic.

Links

The links listed here are those that would be useful for the types of research done by our students. Some of the sites listed will be most useful for teachers. If you have a link that would be useful to others, bring to the attention of the Librarian.

New Books

Look here for a listing of the new books the library has acquired. Read the brief descriptions to find one you would like to read. Students may submit their own descriptions of books they have enjoyed.

The Big 6 Template

The Big 6 is a method of conducting research and using the information and was created by Michael B. Eisenberg and Robert E. Berkowitz. I have taken their outline and adapted it for WHS students. Their method will help you organize yourself as you conduct research and write your paper. For more information, visit The Big6 home page.

MassCat

MassCat is an online library catalog . Libraries that are members of SEMLS (Southeastern Massachusetts Library System) have placed their catalogs online with MassCat. This gives students and teachers the option of searching the WHS catalog from home. They may also borrow books from other libraries on MassCat. See the WHS Librarian for details.
