ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS CLUB

(AKA: THE GREEN TEAM)

The Environmental Awareness Club at the Middle School recognizes the crisis that is threatening our world in the form of glogal climate change.  We are committed to helping change the behaviors that contribute to Global Warming through education and activism.  Our Main focus is within our school community and also our homes and the greater Wareham Community.  Students in the Environmental Awareness Club take leadership roles in a variety of different activities designed to incite awareness, concern and change.  Students coordinate the schools recycling effort, including within our cafeteria where students have been composting food waste.  Students have carried out school-wide events such as the "Day of No Lights".  This year, students are planning a seminar to educate the school community about issues pertaining to global climate change.  Members also reach out to the greater Wareham community by becoming involved with the Wareham Recycling Committee.. Our paper recyling efforts last year included an organized effort to save and reuse school supplies that otherwise may have been thrown away.  This year we were able to offer hundreds of binders, notebooks and various school supplies to students.  The Environmental Awareness Club is in the process of upgrading it's school website to keep you informed of all our "green" efforts...

The Green Team would like to remind you to clear out all those old holiday cards out of your house and bring them to the Middle School.  You can then drop them in the marked boxes in the hallways.

What do Stephanie Meyer, J.K. Rowling, Anthony Horowitz, Shel Silverstein and William Shakespeare all have in common?

They were all your age once and they all wanted to write! And they did.  If you know you like to write, if you write even when there's no teacher within a mile of you, if you wake up in the middle of the night with a burning idea that MUST be immediately committed to paper - I'm talking to you.  Come join WMS's Writers Club.

PEACEBUILDERS CLUB:     "Seeking Wise People"

.The Peacebuilders Theme for February is "Seek Wise People".  The students decided to put up a Bulletin Board by the cafeteria starting it with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  They will be asking for nominations at lunch of people that students think are "wise people" that they know personally.  Once the nominations are in, they will add a person to the Board each week through the end of February.  Teachers: If the timing is right in one of your classes, please take a minute to talk to your students about what it means to "seek a wise person".

YEARBOOK CLUB:

Yearbook is a club in which students apply and get accepted into based on Teacher recommendations, grades and other applicable criteria.  Once the committee of 15 is set, the work begins.  First, order forms are created and handed out to the school population.  The students then create the layout, chose the dedication and start taking photographs.  An attempt is made to include as many school events from September through February as possible (because of March completion deadline).

Yearbooks are currently on sale until the end of January.  The earlier that you order, the cheaper it is and the more you get.

HONOR SOCIETY:

The Wareham Middle School Honor Society works to honor and bring the attention of parents, peers, teachers and community the accomplishments of students whose overall performance is outstanding.

HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION INFORMATION:

  1. All students are eligible for membership after receiving High Honors for 2 consecutive trimester.
  2. Selection begins with a 4.00 grade point average (High Honors) for the consecutive trimesters.  A 4.00 grade point average only places the student's name on the list to go through the rating process.
  3. The rating is done by faculty members in the areas of service, leadership, character and citizenship.  All categories have equal weight.  Students are rated on their performance and behavior during the school day and at school functions. Students also submit an application including an essay to the faculty council.

4Students will be evaluated and rated after each trimester.

Some students may be dropped and some added through

this process.  This process encourages students to contin-

ue doing an outstanding job in all areas or work harder to

              become a member.
